Last week I injured my ankle playing volleyball- nearly re-creating the exact scene from 15 years ago. After jumping to block a ball, I came down (possibly on one of the opponent's foot- I neither saw nor remember) and my ankle turned outward. I heard and felt a loud crunching noise and that was it. I couldn't move it. After hobbling off the court with some help, I knew what would happen. My ankle would swell out of my shoe and would then start turning some crazy colors. I had been there before, except last time it was my other ankle. In high school, I tore the ligaments in my ankle, and through a painful recovery (with the help of a sports orthopedic specialist) returned to walking pretty quickly.
This time, I'm not so sure. The doctor said that I have micro-tears in the ligaments. Micro: that sounds better than a full tear, so I'm already doing better than last time. After 1 day of crutches, I decided that the pain was better than those darned things and stopped using them. I guess I'm not the best patient, but I really hate crutches. Now, I get to sport my lovely (note the sarcasm) walking boot. Tim thinks it's cool, but then again, he doesn't have to wear it. Despite looking like Forrest Gump, at least I can get around.
I'm hoping for good news from the Doctor, but am pretty sure that all I can do is wait. Hopefully the time will go by quickly and I can get back to "normal" sometime soon! Until then, here are some pictures of what used to be my good ankle.
Anyone lose a baseball?
Beyond cankle status. At least my toenails are painted, right?
